Kin obi Mamezara Dish | Handmade Shigaraki Ware

190 kr

Crafted with specially reinforced Shigaraki clay, the Kin Obi series combines durability with refined beauty. A soft band of gold glaze runs across the surface, created with manganese and iron glazes traditionally used in Shigaraki vases. The result is a dish with both strength and elegance — matte, subdued tones that glow warmly under the light, enhancing the presence of any food served.

Please note that each piece vary as they are made by hands.

Each plate sold separately.

What is Shigaraki ware?
Shigaraki ware is made in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. Counted as one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, it has a history of more than 1,260 years. In 1976, it was designated a traditional craft by the Japanese government.

About Reinforced Shigaraki

  • Improved Shigaraki clay, while preserving the character of traditional ware

  • 1.6 times stronger than standard Shigaraki (average bending strength 32.4N/mm² vs. 20.0N/mm²)

  • Reduced chipping and cracking

  • Lower water absorption (0.13% compared to 2–3% in regular Shigaraki clay)

Care instructions

Before first use
To help prevent dirt and stains from penetrating the fine crackle pattern on the surface, we recommend “sealing” the dish:

  • Place the dish in a pot with rice-washing water.

  • Heat over medium heat, then lower just before boiling.

  • Simmer gently for about 15 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat and let the dish cool in the water before rinsing and drying thoroughly.

During use

  • Hand wash only with mild detergent and a soft sponge.

  • The base is polished, but avoid dragging across furniture to prevent scratches. If rough, gently smooth with fine sandpaper.

  • Before serving, soak briefly in water to help reduce staining from food oils or juices.

  • Microwave: Not suitable

  • Dishwasher: Not suitable

  • Do not leave liquids inside for long periods, as they may seep through and cause leakage.

After use

  • After washing, dry thoroughly to prevent mold and odor.

  • When storing, place thin paper between pieces to avoid scratches.

Colors may appear slightly different depending on your monitor. Since each item is handmade, variations in size, color, and pattern are part of its unique character.
