Characterized by its slender posture and graceful, arched back—much like a real cat—the "Seto Maneki-Neko" was first created in the late Meiji period (around the late 1890s to 1900s), adapting European plaster mold techniques originally used for Seto ceramic figurines (Seto Novelties) crafted for overseas export.
In Japanese tradition, a raised right paw is believed to invite financial prosperity and good fortune, while a raised left paw welcomes customers and relationships.
Cradled in its left paw is a traditional temari (embroidered thread ball)—a cherished auspicious talisman imbued with a parent's heartfelt wish for children to grow up in peaceful harmony (marumaru) and live a buoyant, joyful, and spiritually fulfilling life.
