Shigaraki ware fish plate

$59

A plate for grilled fish made with the pottery
Shigaraki is one of Japan's six ancient kilns and is still one of Japan's leading pottery areas. This is a plate for grilled fish that was made together with a pottery in Shigaraki. The oblong plate is perfect for serving grilled fish in both length and width. It's a shape that accentuates the dining table, and it's also useful for serving other than grilled fish.

Corner cut shape that is long but does not look too big
The fish plate is 26 cm long. It is a size that can be served not only fillets, but also slightly longer fish such as horse mackerel without cutting. It's a solid and reliable size, but it doesn't float on the dining table because it's an octagon with the four corners cut off. Since the rim is slightly raised, you can use it without the juice of soy sauce or grated radish spilling out of the plate.

Grilled fish, of course, and other uses
"Seven" of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten is engraved. Elongated plates are not limited to grilled fish, but can be used for a variety of occasions, from everyday use to hospitality, such as arranging side dishes or arranging baked sweets.

Care Instructions

Microwave safe.

Before first use
To help prevent dirt and stains from penetrating the fine crackle pattern on the surface, we recommend “sealing” the dish:

  • Place the dish in a pot with rice-washing water.

  • Heat over medium heat, then lower just before boiling.

  • Simmer gently for about 15 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat and let the dish cool in the water before rinsing and drying thoroughly.

During use

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent cracks.

  • Soak briefly in clean water before use to reduce staining and odors.

After use

  • Dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended for longevity.

  • Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid metal scrubbers or abrasive cleaners.

  • Do not leave soaking in water. After washing, dry well with a soft cloth and store in a ventilated place.

Important notes

  • Handle with care to avoid chipping or cracking.

  • Stop using if noticeable cracks appear.

  • Fine cracks may develop with use — this is a natural feature of pottery and part of its unique texture.

  • Each piece is handmade, so variations in color, shape, and finish are to be expected.
