Made in Japan
This "Heishiki" set is made of traditional Japanese pottery , featuring the rare Kairagi glaze. Pottery is naturally porous and absorbent, requiring special care to maintain its quality and prevent staining.
1. Pre-Use Preparation: Initial Sealing ("Medome")
Before the first use, we highly recommend performing an initial sealing process ("Medome") to reduce the cup and dish's porosity and minimize staining and odors over time:
Method:
Place the items in a pot and cover them completely with water mixed with rice washing water (or clear water with a tablespoon of flour/starch).
Heat slowly over low heat until the water simmers gently, then turn off the heat.
Allow the items to cool down naturally in the water (ideally overnight).
Remove, rinse with clean water, and allow to dry completely.
2. Daily Use and Cleaning
Avoid Soaking: After use, please wash immediately and do not leave the cup or dish soaking in water, as the porous material will absorb dirt, oil, and coffee residues, leading to odors and mildew.
Gentle Hand Wash Only: Use a mild, neutral detergent and a soft sponge for cleaning.
Do not use steel wool, abrasive scrubbers, or harsh cleaners, as these can scratch or damage the delicate Kairagi glaze.
No Machine Washing: We strongly advise against using a dishwasher or dryer. The high heat, strong jets, and vibrations can cause stress cracks or damage the pottery.
Prevent Staining: Before pouring coffee, you may briefly soak the item in warm water for about five minutes. This allows the pottery to absorb clean water, which helps prevent coffee stains from deeply penetrating the surface.
3. Drying and Storage
Thorough Drying: After washing, the cup and dish must be air-dried completely (natural air drying is best), especially the base. Storing the item while damp is the main cause of mildew and odors.
Prevent Chipping: When storing, use soft cloths or paper towels between items to prevent rubbing and chipping.
Note: Traditional Japanese pottery, including the Kairagi finish, will gradually change its color and texture with continued use and time. This is valued in Japanese culture as "the scenery" ( keshiki)—a unique patina that enhances the item's beauty.
Each piece is carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans. Since most of our ceramics are made from natural materials, slight variations in color and texture may occur. We appreciate your understanding and hope you enjoy the uniqueness of each piece.
