HAND-PAINTED CHRYSANTHEMUM BASKET BOWL
A small Japanese pottery bowl shaped almost like a flower basket, with a twisted handle arching over the top.
The surface is filled with hand-painted chrysanthemums in different colours and forms, extending around the inside and outside of the bowl. Fine painted details along the rim and foot complete the decoration, while the sculpted handle gives the piece an unusual three-dimensional presence.
In Japan, the chrysanthemum has been appreciated for centuries and is traditionally associated with longevity and good fortune. Here, the classical flower motif feels lively and generous, with each bloom painted a little differently.
Each piece is individually hand-painted, so variations in colour, brushwork and pattern are part of its character.
