classic mug from Seto | NAKAGAWA MASASHICHI SHOTEN

$47

Part of the “Kihon no Isshiki” (Basic Essentials) series, this cup is designed to be used comfortably in everyday life—without fuss. Made in collaboration with kiln artisans across Japan, the series offers a compact yet versatile set of tableware to cover three daily meals.

This cup is produced by Mizuyoshi Seitosho, a long-established kiln located in Seto, a city with over a thousand years of pottery history and synonymous with ceramics in Japan. Its rustic charm is inspired by the “ishizara” (stone plate) that was widely loved by common folk during the Edo period.

The slightly thick ceramic body and upright form make it a sturdy and honest vessel for daily use. Suitable for both hot and cold drinks.

Care Instructions
・Before first use, we recommend sealing the surface with medome (starch bath):
– Boil the cup gently in rice water for about 15 minutes, then cool completely in the liquid. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

・Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent cracks.

・Soak briefly in water before use to help reduce staining or odor absorption.

・Do not leave liquids in the cup for long periods without prior sealing, as unglazed areas (such as the base) may absorb moisture.

・Use a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid harsh scrubbing tools or abrasive cleaners.

・Dry well before storage.

・Fine hairline cracks (called kannyu) may develop with use. These are a natural feature of the glaze and do not affect usability.

・Each item is handmade—slight variations in shape, color, and finish are part of its character.
