Iga Ware Hexagonal Stemmed Ceramic Smal Bowl | Azmaya
$93
A distinctive handcrafted Japanese ceramic vessel featuring a softly rounded bowl perched atop a sharply sculpted hexagonal pedestal base.
Handcrafted in Iga, Mie Prefecture—a region celebrated for its centuries-old earthenware heritage—this expressive bowl is made from authentic local Iga clay and traditional mineral glazes. Each piece is individually shaped on a potter's wheel by skilled artisans at the Kobou Kiln, designed by Kaoru Watanabe.
The glaze is applied solely to the upper bowl, leaving the faceted hexagonal foot unglazed to highlight the tactile warmth, coarse grain, and raw beauty of natural Iga earth. Over time and with repeated use, both the glazed interior and the raw clay base naturally develop a rich patina, allowing the vessel to gently "grow" and mature alongside you.
With its versatile diameter of 99 mm and height of 70 mm, it functions gracefully as a small side bowl (kobachi) for appetizers, seasoned vegetables, nuts, snacks, or even as an oversized guinomi sake cup for leisurely drinking.

Craft & Initial Care Guide (Medome):
-
First-Use Preparation (Medome / Seasoning): Because authentic earthenware (tsuchimono) is naturally porous, seasoning the bowl before first use is recommended. Submerge the bowl in a pot filled with rice-washing water (or water with a spoonful of starch/flour) and simmer gently on low heat for about 10 minutes. Let cool, then rinse thoroughly. This seals the microscopic pores to prevent food stains and odors.
-
Drying & Storage: After washing, dry completely in a well-ventilated area before storing to prevent moisture retention and mold.
-
Artisan Variations: Each piece is thrown and glazed by hand; slight variations in glaze flow, iron spots, dimensions, and weight are celebrated characteristics of authentic Japanese handcrafted pottery.
