Salt Jar Made from Tokoname Clay — Keeps Salt Smooth and Clump-Free

Crafted by Yamagen Kiln in Aichi Prefecture, Japan — a pottery studio with three generations of heritage and one of the six ancient kilns of Japan — this Tokoname ware salt jar is designed for everyday use with traditional wisdom. Made from coarse, unglazed Tokoname clay, it naturally absorbs and releases moisture, helping to prevent salt from hardening due to humidity changes. The result: smooth, easy-to-sprinkle salt, always ready at hand.

Smart Design for Daily Use

The unsealed lid simply rests on top, making it easy to open and close with one hand while cooking. The wide opening allows for easy scooping with fingers or a small spoon. The jar’s shape is well-balanced and stable, thoughtfully sized to fit comfortably in your hand.

Natural Materials, Timeless Look

The surface of Tokoname clay has a warm, textured appearance that suits both kitchen counters and dining tables. Available in two subtle tones — white and grey — you can use them to distinguish different types of salt. The minimalist look complements any setting, while the natural variations in color and texture make each jar unique.

Why Tokoname Ware Helps Prevent Salt Clumping

Most salts clump when exposed to fluctuating humidity. Tokoname ware, being unglazed and porous, absorbs excess moisture and gradually releases it — stabilizing the salt’s environment. Over time, you may notice subtle color changes on the jar’s surface, especially when using mineral-rich salts like sea salt. This is a sign that the jar is actively regulating humidity and protecting the salt.

Usage & Care

Before Use
• Rinse with cold or lukewarm water and let it dry completely before filling.

During Use
• Do not use in microwave, dishwasher, oven, or over open flame.
• Avoid contact with oils or creams, which may be absorbed into the surface.
• Shake the jar occasionally to keep the salt loose.
• Avoid sudden temperature changes (e.g., pouring boiling water into a cold jar).

After Use
• Hand wash with a soft sponge. Avoid abrasives or metal scrubbers.
• Do not soak for long periods — allow to dry fully after each wash.
• Store in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mold or staining.

Notes
• Over time, salt crystals may appear on the outer surface — this is normal.
• Color may change depending on the salt used.
• If absorption capacity decreases, refresh by boiling the jar in water with baking soda.
• Each piece is handcrafted. Slight variations in shape, texture, and color are part of its character.
• Discontinue use if cracks appear.
