It was also the time in the Edo period when the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) culture getting popular.
Local Japanese tourist are coming for Onsen, and the Kokeshi was sold as a souvenir for the hot spring visitors. Kokeshi started as a souvenir wooden dolls for children in those days.
From Meiji to Taisho era, Kokeshi became out of fashion and replaced by the plastic dolls that came over from overseas . In Showa period, Kokeshi's beauty has been rediscovered and the first Kokeshi boom came around 1935. The second Kokeshi-boom came after the Discover-Japan-boom in the 1970' , now we are in the 3rd Kokeshi-boom.
