The genealogy of Kokeshi dolls by Ichiro Anpo is the oldest in the southern system.
Originating from being a woodworker of the southern family of the Genroku era.
It is said that he started making kokeshi dolls in the early Showa period before the war.
Unlike the unpainted ones that originated as pacifiers and the firming of teeth of babies,
It is designed with an original painting by the Anpo family.
It was abolished in the days of Anpo Ichi.
Postwar vintage made over 50 years ago is a valuable type of kokeshi doll.

Although there are discoloration and stains over the years,
The crimson color of the flower remains firmly.

Kokeshi craftsmen were originally making living by producing wood miscellaneous goods such as bowls and trays at the beginning. It started at Togatta area in the current Miyagi Pref. where the making of Kokeshi began in the early 1800s. It was also the time in the Edo period when the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) culture getting popular.
Local Japanese tourist are coming for Onsen, and the Kokeshi was sold as a souvenir for the hot spring visitors. Kokeshi started as a souvenir wooden dolls for children in those days.
From Meiji to Taisho era, Kokeshi became out of fashion and replaced by the plastic dolls that came over from overseas . In Showa period, Kokeshi's beauty has been rediscovered and the first Kokeshi boom came around 1935. The second Kokeshi-boom came after the Discover-Japan-boom in the 1970' , now we are in the 3rd Kokeshi-boom. Recently, Kokeshi is in a trend as a Japan traditional art and is popular especially among young ladies.
