KOKESHI
Kokeshi craftsmen were originally making living by producing wood miscellaneous goods such as bowls and trays at the beginning. It started in the Togatta area in the current Miyagi Pref. where the making of Kokeshi began in the early 1800s. It was also the time in the Edo period when the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) culture got popular.
Local Japanese tourists are coming for Onsen, and the Kokeshi was sold as a souvenir for the hot spring visitors. Kokeshi started as a souvenir of wooden dolls for children in those days.
From Meiji to the Taisho era, Kokeshi became out of fashion and replaced by the plastic dolls that came over from overseas. In the Showa period, Kokeshi's beauty has been rediscovered and the first Kokeshi boom came around 1935. The second Kokeshi-boom came after the Discover-Japan-boom in the 1970', now we are in the 3rd Kokeshi-boom. Recently, Kokeshi is in trend as Japanese traditional art and is popular, especially among young ladies.
