Chrysanthemum in the Asteraceae family. Came to Japan from China during the Heian period and was used for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Cultivation become popular, as it has been incorporated into the Imperial Palace events such as the "Shigeyo" festival. During the Kamakura period, it was used by Emperor Gotoba and became the crest of the Emperor and the Imperial Family.
