Characterized by its slender posture and graceful, arched back—reminiscent of a living feline—the traditional "Seto Maneki-Neko" originated in the late Meiji period (late 1890s to 1900s), adapting European plaster mold techniques pioneered for export figurines known as Seto Novelties.
In Japanese tradition, a raised right paw is cherished for inviting wealth, financial prosperity, and good fortune. This charming piece features classic black-and-white bicolor markings (buchi), distinctively parted over the forehead in the pattern known as hachiware. Because this upside-down "V" shape resembles the kanji character for eight (八)—widely revered in Japan for suehirogari, or expanding prosperity toward the future—this design is cherished as an exceptionally auspicious lucky charm.
