Patch | Gion Festival Sagimai (Egrets Dance)

109 kr

Sagimai dance is held at Yasaka Shrine during Gion festival. This mesmerizing dance descended from Chinese tanabata folklore about magpies helping a couple in love. However magpies where not common in Kyoto, therefore egrets wearing umbrellas became the motif in Japan. "Sagimai" spread from Kyoto to Yamaguchi prefecture and further to Tsuwano-cho in Shimane. It died out in the late Edo period, but revived again around 1950.
